Types and Characteristics of Osteopathic Treatment

Firstly and foremost Osteopathic treatment is based on principles outlined by Dr Still. The ones mentioned above are two of the most important and they make Osteopathy unique. There are many more Osteopathic principles, on which we won't go into detail here. Osteopaths can interpret these principles differently, resulting in a diverse range of practitioners in our profession. In applying treatment, Osteopaths can use a variety of approaches. These can be grouped under 3 main categories:
1.Direct approach.
Usually involves the Osteopath using some degree of force to overcome restrictions of movement in the patient. Includes techniques such as joint manipulation, stretching, massage.
- Direct
- Indirect
- Combination of Direct and Indirect

2.Indirect approach
Involves the Osteopath using little or no force of their own but relying on the patient's inbuilt drive towards Health for the power to create a therapeutic response. Generally used in more complex and/or chronic situations, or where the application of force is not an option e.g. the treatment of children, elderly or the very ill. It includes approaches such as Functional Technique, Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (or Cranial Osteopathy), and Biodynamic Osteopathy.

3. Combination of Direct/Indirect As the name suggests this approach uses a combination of both categories.
At the Kew Osteopathic Clinic we adapt our approach depending on patient requirements. Our practitioners can use a combination of direct and indirect techniques. If you would like more detailed information on these approaches or Osteopathy in general please call us and speak to one of our Osteopaths by clicking here.
