Osteopathy and Children

Osteopathy gives us a wonderful approach to treat symptoms associated with certain musculoskeletal conditions in newborns and children. Osteopathy relies on using the therapeutic process of the child's own Health to dictate and power the treatment. Very little of the Osteopath's own force is applied.

Osteopathy may be helpful* in reducing the symptoms of a range of childhood conditions and issues:

  • flathead syndrome- caused by constant pressure on the soft cranial bones, may be associated with a cervical injury or birth trauma
  • breastfeeding attachment issues- the flexibility of the cervical spine & TMJ is important in latching correctly onto the breast.
  • torticollis (wry neck)- may be caused by a muscular strain in the neck either at birth or develop later on.
  • growing pains e.g. knee or leg pain in teenagers may be due to tendon inflammation at the bony attatchments as the bone is growing longer.
  • scoliosis- assessing , monitoring & reducing musculoskeletal restrictions. This may require referral to a General Practitioner or orthopaedic specialist
  • back pain - often due to heavy school bags
  • neck/shoulder pain due to prolonged screen use causing muscular tensions and incorrect spinal posture.
  • poor posture- Weakened spinal postural muscles due to sedentary lifestyles may be helped with strengthening exercises
  • playground injuries such as minor muscular sprains and strains

*There is inconclusive evidence that manual therapy may be effective in the management of the above conditions
